Having reference to the last paragraph of my

despatch No. 22 of June 7th I have now the honour to en cloge

translation of the Acting Civil Governor's communication on

the subject of the Shatien shooting incident, together with

copy of my reply thereto.

Public opinion is very inflamed over the Macao

affair, and Dr Wu Ting-fang evidently desires not to lay

himself open to a charge of weakness in the matter of defend-

ing Chinese interests against not only the Portuguese authori-

ties, but also against those of Hongkong.
